With wedding season in full swing I’ve let my “10 Things” series take the back burner.  But this week, I’m headed into a double header weekend and I thought it would be fun to break from wedding blogs to bring you another installment of “10 Things”!  Today, we’re talking about your wedding dress.  One of the number one things I hear a bride say is “I don’t want my dress to get dirty!”  Well, ladies, I hate to break it to you, but your dress will most likely get dirty!! ….And that’s okay.

  • The dress will most likely only get dirty underneath – no one will see it! [Most] wedding dresses have a bottom lining that runs the length of the dress and train.  This lining is there to protect your dress.  No one will ever see the underside of your dress.
  • If you do outdoor portraits, there’s a likely chance that the lining will get dirty, and that’s okay! No one will see it and….
  • The dress can be cleaned – you’re much more likely to end the evening with spilled wine on your dress than you are a big spot of dirt or mud.  My suggestion is to relax and enjoy your day and let the cleaners do what they do best.
  • I don’t want your dress to get dirty either, but I’ve done enough weddings that I know that it happens.  And if you can’t let your dress down, we won’t be able to see all the gorgeousness!

Honestly, I know that you’ve got a lot on your mind on your wedding day.  This is something that doesn’t need to be a stressor.  Know that I (and all photographers) are doing the best we can to serve you well, create beautiful photographs that will be loved for generations, and keep your dress (and shoes) and clean as possible.  But also, know that what matters the most is that you’re getting married to your one and and only and the best thing you can do, is relax and trust us!

Here are some photos of past Kathryn Ivy brides who let go, let their dresses get a little (or a lot) dirty and had a wedding to remember!

Cat's dress was a bit easier because she didn't have a train - the lace LOVED picking up the leaves!  I love how her new hubby was so sweet to pick the leaves out and clear out a space for her! It rained on Hannah's wedding day - and thankfully we were able do most everything outside!  We kept the outside of her dress clean through the first look, ceremony, and portraits!  She let go afterwards and has the pics to prove it!  She had a blast and isn't upset about her dress at all! It rained on Halley's wedding day as well, but she trusted me and as you can see as they run through their sparkler exit, there wasn't even any dirt on the bottom of the dress! And lastly, Mattie had the best perspective.  As she was headed out in the mist to see her groom, she was holding her dress and at the last moment realized that it wasn't about the dress...it was about him and her and this moment.  She dropped her dress, and walked to see her groom for the first time.  This moment and this photo wouldn't have happened had she been carrying her dress!   And lastly, Mattie had the best perspective.  As she was headed out in the mist to see her groom, she was holding her dress and at the last moment realized that it wasn’t about the dress…it was about him and her and this moment.  She dropped her dress, and walked to see her groom for the first time.  This moment and this photo wouldn’t have happened had she been carrying her dress!

I want to end this making sure you know that I (or your photographer) wants the best for you (and your dress) and we will do all we can to respect the day and everything that goes along with it.  We just need you to trust us, let go, and enjoy your day – celebrate!
